As much as my desk is in need of a serious declutter, we’ll keep going with the kitchen this week and work on the Fridge.
If you can keep the kids out of the fridge, then it is much easier to keep tidy and just needs a quick go through each week to stay on top of use by dates and sad looking vegetables.
- I like to remove everything from the fridge when I clean it so this may not be a great option in the middle of summer if you don’t have aircon. I actually put anything I’m worried about spoiling into my second fridge or an eski to be on the safe side.
- Once the fridge is empty, grab yourself a bucket of warm soapy water and a cloth and get cleaning. You may want to remove the shelves and door sections, to wash in the sink, depending on how grotty your fridge is. Don’t forget to clean under the crisper drawers, along your door seals and the outside of the fridge while you’re at it.
- Now that you have a nice clean canvas, you can start putting the stuff back in. Be sure to give it all a wipe over and check used by dates before it goes back in, you’d be surprised at how many things can slip passed their used by without you realising. Try and keep like items together to make it easier to find things and put them away. We have a couple long baskets and plastic drawers that make this easier.
If you happen to have a couple of sad looking vegetables like wilted carrots and celery, how about making yourself a soup or stock rather than tossing them, unless you have pets (chooks, rabbits etc) that will eat them.
Aside from the cleaning, the fridge is a nice, simple declutter and should only need a minute or two to maintain when making your grocery list or packing away the new groceries.
As you can see from my before pics, the kids aren’t so great at keeping the lids on things or wiping up their spills. I probably should have done this during the holidays, but at least with them back at school they aren’t here during the day to make it a mess again.
We had some stuff that was passed it’s used by and some leftovers for the dog and the
bottomless pits kids ate some of the others.
